When you’re planning a new vegetable garden, choose a site with good soil drainage and no standing water. Be sure the location is sunny; lettuce and spinach need direct sunlight for four to five hours daily, carrots and beets require five to six hours and tomatoes and peppers need eight hours. Remember that trees and shrubs within 20 ft. compete with vegetables for water and make sure you can see the garden from the house.
